HalalCheck AI — Last updated: 27 May 2026

HalalCheck AI (“we”, “our”, “the app”) is a mobile application that helps users determine whether food product ingredients are permissible under Islamic dietary guidelines. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. Information We Collect

Ingredient text you submit. When you type, paste, or scan ingredient labels, the text is sent to our server to be analysed and is retained in anonymised form so we can improve the ingredient database over time. No personally identifiable information (PII) is attached to these requests, and the text is never linked to any user identity.

Scan history. If you use the history feature, your previous ingredient checks are stored locally on your device only using on-device storage (Hive). This data never leaves your device and is deleted when you uninstall the app.

Camera & Photo Library. When you scan a label using the camera or select a photo from your library, the image is normally processed on-device by the OCR engine (Google ML Kit on Android, Apple Vision on iOS) and is not uploaded. If you choose the optional “Enhance with AI” option for a hard-to-read label, the label image is sent to our server and read by our AI provider (Anthropic) to extract the ingredient text. We send only the label image for this purpose, over an encrypted connection, and it is not linked to your identity.

Device identifiers. We generate an anonymous random identifier (UUID) for your device solely to enforce per-device rate limits on our service. This identifier is randomly generated and is not linked to your Apple or Google account, hardware serial number, or any personal data. It is stored locally on your device. We do not collect advertising IDs or any hardware-level device identifiers.

2. Advertising (Google AdMob)

The free version of HalalCheck AI displays advertisements provided by Google AdMob. Google may collect and use data in accordance with its own Privacy Policy, including device identifiers and interest-based advertising. You can opt out of personalised ads in your device settings (iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Advertising; Android: Settings → Google → Ads).

Pro subscribers have ads permanently removed and are not subject to AdMob data collection within the app.

3. In-App Purchases

Purchase transactions are handled entirely by Apple App Store or Google Play. We do not receive or store your payment card details. We only receive a confirmation token indicating whether a purchase was successful.

4. How We Use Your Data

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data. The only third parties that may receive data are:

6. Data Retention

Ingredient queries submitted to our server are retained in anonymised form (without any personal identifier) to improve the service. Aggregate statistics (e.g. which ingredients are most frequently queried) may be retained indefinitely. If you would like your data removed, please contact us using the App Feedback option in Settings.

7. Children’s Privacy

HalalCheck AI is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal data through the app, please use the App Feedback option in Settings so we can delete it.

8. Security

All communication between the app and our server uses HTTPS/TLS encryption. We apply industry-standard practices to protect data in transit and at rest.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The updated version will be available at this URL with a revised “Last updated” date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
